WannaCry, Petya make Cybersecurity graduates hot property on the job street

A spate of recent ransomware attacks such as WannaCry and Petya has led corporate India scrambling to hire cyber-security experts to protect their IT systems.

Demand for graduates specialising in cyber security has shot up to an alltime high, and universities and educational institutes are introducing these programmes to cater to the growing requirements.

Students from the 2017 batch of the Gujarat Forensic Sciences University in Gandhinagar with degrees such as M. Tech in Cyber Security & Incident Response and M.Sc. in Digital Forensics & Information Assurance received 70 offers from companies such as Reliance Industries, EY, KPMG, Deloitte, PwC, Adobe and Axis Bank. Last year, only 30 students were placed.

“The demand for cyber-security specialists has shot up so much after the recent spate of cyber-attacks that six companies have already rolled out about 30 pre-placement offers to batch 2018,” said Digvijaysinh Rathod, training and placement officer at the university.

Ransomware attacks typically lock down computers until money is paid to free them. The Petya strike earlier this week came after the WannaCry attack in May, shutting down thousands of computers globally and in some cases, crippling company operations. Analysts said cyber-attacks are now common and India requires more than just traditional network specialists.

“We need advanced malware analysts, incident response analysts and specialists who are post-breach experts,” said Rajpreet Kaur, a senior research analyst at Gartner. To feed into this demand, colleges are rolling out cyber-security courses. The SP Jain School of High Technology in Mumbai started a cyber-security and data security specialist programme this year. Two months of this six-month course will be spent interning with various companies.

Ola replaces vehicle icons with Transformers 5

Ola has replaced icons depicting its fleet of vehicles with characters from the movie Transformers. In Ola app, Ola Micro now appears as Bumblebee, while Stinger has taken over the Ola Mini icon. Ola Share and Ola Prime are now Crosschairs and Optimus Prime respectively. Ola has transformed icons for Ola Prime SUV, Ola Prime Exec, and Ola Lux to Ironhide, Drift, and Lockdown respectively.

Further, Ola will showcase exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of ‘Transformers 5: The Last Knight’, cast interviews with Anthony Hopkins, and more on Prime Play. Ola is giving its riders a chance to win free movie tickets and merchandise as well. The contest will be conducted on June 29 via Ola’s official Twitter handle and Facebook page. “Transformers5 – “The Last Knight” tickets up for grabs! Capture Bumblebee within the outline and share it with us on Facebook or Twitter, using #TransformersOnOla,” Ola said in a blog post.

The ‘Transformers 5: The Last Knight’ movie was released in India on June 23. The movie is a sequel to last year’s ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction.’ Hopkins has already said that ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ is one of the biggest movies he has ever made. While ‘Transformers 5: The Last Knight’ is the fifth movie in the ‘Transformers’ series, this is the first film in the series that Hopkins has been a part of.

Twitter for Android updated with automatic Night Mode feature

Days after revamping the user interface of its iOS and Android apps, Twitter has introduced another feature called ‘Automatic Night Mode’. Until now, users had to manually toggle Night Mode to get dark background in the app. As its name suggests, ‘Automatica Night Mode’ turns on the Night Mode automatically at sunset.

“You can set Night mode to turn on at sunset and off at sunrise. Additional display options are available within the Twitter app settings,” reads the description.

It is worth adding that at any point, users can change ‘Automatic Night Mode’ to manual from the app’s settings.

To activate ‘Automatic Night Mode,’ users simply need to open the sidebar by tapping on their profile image or swiping towards right from the main feed, and tap on the ‘Settings and privacy’ tab. The includes the ‘Display and sound’ option, under which they’ll be able to find night mode option and set up the ‘Automatic at sunset’ option.

The new feature comes as part of Twitter’s version 7.2, and is only available for Android for now. Users can download the updated app from the Google Play Store.

Couple of weeks back, Twitter made some cosmetic changes to its website, as well as Android and iOS apps. The new look includes a circular profile picture, a speech bubble instead of an arrow to reply to tweets, and some minor changes to the fonts.

Earlier this month, the microblogging website was also reported to be testing a new feature called ‘Happening Now‘. It shows a carousel of Twitter cards showing different events or conversations happening on the website, as mentioned by Recode website. Tapping on a card results in opening the timeline around that event or conversation.

Facebook Video Creation App Launch Announced

With an aim to empower its creator community, Facebook has announced that it is planning to launch a new app just for them later this year.

Essentially a video creation app, it will be made just for its star broadcasters, who are also the same folks who are deemed worthy enough to use Facebook Mentions – an app only available to verified accounts owned by journalists, celebrities and other online influencers, Engadget reported on Friday.

Apart from the access to Facebook Live, the new video creation app will have a new “creative kit” that includes tools like special intros and outros to videos, custom stickers, custom frames, among other tools.

It will also have a Community tab, where the rich and famous can interact with their fans and followers on Facebook, Instagram and Messenger, the report said.

Reportedly, Facebook is also running a “small test” in India, of a video tab in the navigation bar of its flagship mobile applications.

Pressing the tab, which resembles a play button, brings up “an endless stream” of Facebook videos, from pages users follow and videos liked or shared by friends.

Snapchat map update raises child safety worries

Snap Map lets people search for places such as schools and see videos and pictures posted by children inside.

It also lets people locate their “friends” on a map that is accurate enough to determine where people live.

Snap, the company behind Snapchat, stressed to the BBC that location sharing was an opt-in feature.

Exact location

Snap Map was launched on Wednesday and was promoted as a “new way to explore the world”.

Video clips and photos that members have posted publicly can be discovered on the map, while members who have chosen to share their location can also be seen on the map by those they have added as “friends“.

However, members can add people they have never met to their friends list too.

A message to parents posted by St Peter’s Academy in Staffordshire warned that the location-sharing feature lets people “locate exactly where you are, which building you are in and exact whereabouts within the building”.

One parent described the update as “dangerous” while another said she could not find the setting to disable it.

People have expressed concern online that the app could be used for stalking or working out exactly where somebody lives.

“If you zoom right in on this new Snapchat map thing it literally tells you where everyone lives? Like exact addresses – bit creepy no?” wrote one user called Leanne.

“This new Snapchat update is awful. An invitation for stalkers, kidnappers, burglars and relationship trust issues,” suggested Jade.

Snap told the BBC that accurate location information was necessary to allow friends to use the service to meet, for example at a restaurant or crowded festival, and said points of interest on the map, such as schools, were provided by third-party mapping service Mapbox.
